A 68-year-old woman and her dog were killed when a car mounted the pavement in Heckmondwike last night.

The woman was walking her pet in High Street near the junction with Lobley Street when the accident involving a green Toyota Corolla happened.

The car demolished a bus stop and a metal fence outside Heckmondwike Social Education Centre.

Maureen Parkinson, who lives opposite the accident scene, said: "I heard a tremendous noise. I looked out of the window and saw this car. It must have been going down the hill because it hit the bus shelter and ended up facing across the road," she said.

The Toyota driver was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital. The woman has not yet been named by police.
