Campaigners are celebrating today after it was announced Bingley is set to get £150,000 new public toilets.

Community groups have been battling for years for the long-awaited conveniences, which would be situated in the heart of the town.

The toilets would be serviced by a full-time attendant and would include facilities for men, women, children and the disabled.

Proposed opening times would be from 8am to 6pm and there would be a charge of 20p per visit.

A site for the toilets has not yet been decided on, but Bradford Council has suggested they should be built near Bingley Arts Centre off Main Street, Bingley.

It is hoped once planning permission has been approved work will be carried out during the summer.

The news was announced at a Shipley Area Committee meeting last night by Roy Garland, of the Council's waste management department.

Bingley town centre manager David Dinsey said: "This is without doubt great news for the people who live, shop, visit and work in the town."

And Kay Adams, who has owned Kay Krafts, Chapel Lane, Bingley, for nearly ten years, commented: "It's brilliant news. We are all trying our best to get some facilities for Bingley because until we do it won't be a thriving town again."

Damian Fisher, principal cleansing officer for the Council, said: "We recognise that new toilets are something that shoppers, businesses and visitors want to see in Bingley.''

He continued: "As a result of the new funding earmarked for improving public conveniences around the district, Bingley is in line for smart new toilets.

"These will complement other planned environmental improvements in the town."
