A scheme to introduce a string of new warning signs on the road between Burley Woodhead and Ilkley has been halted by Bradford Environ-ment chief Anne Hawkes-worth.

Coun Hawkesworth, a district and parish councillor for Ilkley, has asked for the work taking place along the Moor Road to be 'paused' while she scrutinises it.

The appearance of a series of tall metal poles at the roadside this week had piqued the curiosity of motorists.

Stretching from Burley Woodhead to the cattle grid at the end of Hangingstone Road, they were in fact destined to be the foundations for 20 new signs.

The idea was to warn drivers about hazards like sheep, horse riders, and dangerous bends, but Coun Hawkesworth, who only found out about the work from the Gazette, is worried the plans could be an example of 'overkill'.

She said: "This is a major warning sign scheme to provide both new signs and make improvements to existing ones. It was approved under delegated powers and I knew nothing about it.

"The scheme came about following complaints from local farmers, horse riders and three local livery stables, among others.

"I have approved plans for 'SLOW' markings to be put on that road, which I believe is eminently sensible, but I have asked them to halt work on the signs so I can see exactly what we are talking about."

The new signage coincides with an ongoing traffic calming scheme being carried out in Burley Woodhead,

where the speed limit has been reduced to 20mph and speed humps put in place.
