Otley: The LGU Medal was, as usual, played for over two separate days. The Sunday players, not surprisingly, achieved three of the four winning scores as the inclement weather on Tuesday generally wreaked havoc. Anthea Smithies returned to competitive golf and produced an excellent score. Results were:

Division One - A Smithies 76-10-66; B Jamieson 80-6-74. Division Two - C Davies 104-28-76; P Coyle 118-27-91.

There was plenty more golf played inbetween the ladies' and men's competition days. The long-established Gilchrist Trophy was played for on the Wednesday at Wetherby Golf Club.

Various local clubs were invited to submit teams and Otley's team of President Les Quin, captain Ron Walker, vice-captain Paul Ridyard and the professional Steve Tomkinson emerged as convincing winners. Otley will now have the honour of staging the competition next year.

On Thursday a team consisting of the immediate past captain David Hall, Graham Sharpe and assistant professional Nathan Stead played in the prestigious final West Yorkshire Winter Alliance.

On this occasion a prize proved elusive for the team but Nathan Stead won the individual competition.

Nathan has played consistently well and finished among the prizes in all the competitions that he has entered this year.

Returning to club golf on Saturday, 162 members entered the April Medal. In the lovely sunshine the course looked a picture and the firm conditions under foot suggested an ideal day for good scoring.

Division One - P Howarth 76-10-66; P Ridyard 78-11-67; J W Smith 77-8-69. Division Two - R Turner 79-14-65; D A Taylor 82-16-66; J E Collins 78-12-66. Division Three - M Shippey 84-18-66; B L Hall 91-24-67; M Rawnsley 85-18-67.

Cookridge Hall: Eric Green, the Seniors Captain, would love to have featured in the first three on his return from wintering in South Africa.

More so because it was his last game before having an operation on his foot that will keep him out of action for a few weeks. It wasn't to be though.

In a full handicap stableford competition the winner was Ken Battersby.

Ken had an extremely steady round to record a fine score of 42 points. In a close match John Blanchard was second on 41 and Mike Askey came in third with 40 points.
