Shipley Labour MP Chris Leslie spoke to 120 members of school councils from across Bradford about his career and his role as an MP.

The participants discussed how to improve their communities at a one-day conference. At the Celebrating School Councils event, held at City Hall, the youngsters drew up action plans during workshops.

Four secondary schools and 20 primary schools took part in the day, which followed a successful similar event last November.

Mr Leslie also told them about parliament and showed how voting in the lobbies works.

Shiraz Akhtar and Amber Brier, members of Bradford and Keighley Youth Parlia-ment, talked about what they did.

The Lord and Lady Mayoress of Bradford, Councillor Richard Wightman and his wife Elizabeth, as well as Bradford Council leader Coun Margaret Eaton also attended.

Joyce Miller, Education Bradford's acting diversity and cohesion manager, said: "School councils can be very influential on what happens in their schools and the local community.

"It has been a wonderful day and the children have worked extremely hard. It shows just how involved they were."
