A firearms amnesty has proved a massive success.

Over 400 weapons and 6,000 rounds of ammunition have been handed in at police stations across the region.

Final returns are still being evaluated, but the haul includes hand guns, rifles, shotguns, air guns and imitation firearms.

The venture was part of a national month-long amnesty, and was co-ordinated locally by the Target initiative.

West Yorkshire Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn praised those who have handed in weapons.

He said: "This amnesty offered the public the opportunity to help us make the streets of our towns and cities safer, and people have demonstrated their support by doing just that.

"We've been acutely aware for some time of the harm guns can do. Major policing operations have taken guns and those who use them out of circulation, and continue to do so.

"Every firearm that remains on the street poses a threat to life. West Yorkshire Police is committed to ridding the county of violent crime, not just this month but also long term.

"Target will continue to fight crime and the fear of crime through positive policing initiatives and has many operations planned for the next 12 months."
