A lollipop lady from one of North Yorkshire's busiest patrol spots has been distinguished as part of the service's golden jubilee.

North Yorkshire County Council celebrated 50 years of the service with a series of events on Tuesday, presenting commemorative cards and gold badges to its lollipop men and ladies.

And Wendy Pickles (pictured above), who serves Cowling Primary School on the busy Keighley to Colne A6068, was one of those singled out.

Wendy, who also works as a part-time assistant at the school, has patrolled the road full-time for six years after previously helping as relief cover on the same patrol.

She said: "I'm not bothered whether it's freezing cold or snowing. I guess we are a hardy breed.

"But I love helping the kids in a morning and I know all their names."

A spokesman for the schools patrol service said: "The biggest difference to the service over the last 50 years is the number of parents driving their children to school themselves.

"The patrols are very important to the public and also act as a social role. The village bobby has gone but the lollipop lady has stood as a pillar of the community."
