Skipton will be awash with people this weekend when the second Skipton Waterways Festival hits town.

The canal promenade event will take place from noon tomorrow until Bank Holiday Monday and will involve bands, dancers, street entertainers, birds of prey, vintage engines and rope-making.

There will also be children's activities and guided walks, and a best illuminated boat competition at 10pm tomorrow.

Skipton theatre group the Arcadia Players will be performing the Crucible, by Arthur Miller, at the festival from 1pm on Sunday. The performance will be an early dress rehearsal for more showings from May 22 to 24 at Skipton Little Theatre. For tickets ring (01274) 590559.

Skipton Races will take place at Heslaker Farm in Skipton tomorrow from 2pm.

The entry fee is £10 per person or £20 per car including occupants.

Children will be able to travel free on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway tomorrow and Sunday from 10.30am. For train times ring (01756) 795189.

On Sunday, 17th-Century dance and music by the Arbeau Dancers is to be performed at East Riddlesden Hall, Keighley, from 1pm to 4pm. Contact (01535) 607075.

On Monday the annual Ilkley Carnival Procession will parade through the streets of the town starting at 12.45pm. This will be followed by a gala at East Holmes Field, Denton Road, Ilkley.

The Hot Aire Concert Band will also be performing in Lister Park, Bradford, on Monday, from 2pm to 4.30pm.

People attending any outdoors events are advised to be prepared for seasonal showers. Tomorrow will start off dry but by the afternoon there will be strong winds and rain coming from the west, said a spokesman for PA Weather.

Sunday will be a mixture of sunny spells and downfalls of rain and Bank Holiday Monday will continue much like Sunday, with a slight breeze.

Temperatures will be around 12C to 14C, which is about average for this time of year.
