Queensbury school pupils love art so much they could not wait to get started on their entries for the fantastic competition being run by the Telegraph & Argus and Education Bradford.

Children at Russell Hall Primary School, West End, Queensbury, have been creating paintings and drawings for the art competition, aimed at involving school pupils of all ages in this year's Bradford Internation-al Festival.

Work submitted for the competition, based on the festival theme of "love", will be displayed in Bradford city centre during the festival from June 12 to June 22.

Head teacher of Russell Hall Primary School, Michael Ford, said: "It is important to demonstrate to our pupils, their parents and the wider community that, important as they are, there is more to life than SATs.

"This T&A competition is an excellent way to broadcast that message." And pupils at the school have been coming up with lots of ideas for the competition.

Aron Cresswell, ten, said: "I think I'll paint two Yorkshire terriers on a love swing."

And ten-year-old Danni Maidment, said: "I'm drawing a big love-heart with lots of little love hearts."

Russell Hall Primary School was one of two Bradford primary schools to be awarded the "Arts Mark" from the Arts Council last year.

The school aims to maintain a high status for arts and performing arts and runs several out-of-school clubs, covering art, drama, dance and music.

The festival art competition will involve youngsters creating paintings or drawings.

The young people who produce the best pieces will receive a Sony EJ750 personal CD player worth £69.99, donated by Sunwin House, Bradford, and art equipment, donated by Probyns stationery and office products in Bradford.

Schools are being asked to ensure the work is A4 in size and that all entries are received by Friday, May 16 at the latest.

Entries should be marked "Festival Art Competition c/o Deborah Nicholson" and should be sent to Telegraph & Argus, Hall Ings, Bradford, BD1 1JR.
