Sunny weather drew people out in their hundreds for the 2003 Ilkley Fun Run last weekend.

Around 500 participants entered the sponsored race this year, helping to raise £5,000 for organisers Ilkley Rotary Club.

The money, after covering the expense of hosting the Dale-Eddison sponsored event, will be shared out between local charities by the Rotary Club over the coming year.

Runners on Sunday had the choice of two routes - the main fun run or a new, more demanding seven-kilometre race over Middleton Moor.

Organising committee chairman Jonathan Shepherd said: "It was a very successful day and the numbers were up on last year, thanks in main to the good weather, which held until both races were completed.

"After paying for costs we will probably have around £3,000 to distribute to mainly children's charities in the area over the coming year, which is great.

"And the feedback from the first Middleton Moor Trail Race has been very positive, so that will become an annual event now, too."

This year's fun run winner was Lawrie Swan, while Jonnie Butler took first place in the trail race.
