Sheffield Eagles 33, Cougars 6 - Cougars have still to beat the Don Valley jinx -- after crashing to defeat last weekend.

After seven consecutive league wins, the Cougars were looking to put a run of three defeats at Sheffield, behind them.

But the Eagles were powerful and determined to take the scalp of the table-toppers.

They were also determined to use every tyrick in the book to their advantage.

St Helens referee J King has not been a favourite with Cougar fans in the past, and once again he showed he was not prepared to court friendship.

With the home side prepared to exploit any weekeness he allowed violence to go unpunished eartly in the game and almost lost total control.

When he did attempt to get a grip it was Keighley players who found themselves spending 10 minutes in the sin-bin.

Phil Stephenson was the first to go for a high tackle on Eagles player-coach Mark Aston, quickly followed by Oliver Wilkes who accompanied Sheffield's Wayne Flynn to the touchline.

Cougars were down to 11 men when Nick Turnbull took advantage to score the first of his side's four first half tries and send them on their way to a 24-0 half time lead.

Gavin Brown added the conversion and went on to kick six goals in the afternoon.

The Keighley side were clearly struggling to come to terms with the intensity of the Eagles attack and they desperately needed time and space to re-group, but the Sheffield side refused to let up.

Tom O'Reilly scored on his home debut and Gareth Stanley swept in after Jason Ramshaw was penalised for a high tackle on Aston.

It was a half of high-speed ill-tempered action which prevented Gary Moorby's men putting their cultured play into action. Errors continued to creep into their game as they attempted to force an opening.

Tony Weller scored the fourth Eagles try as Cougars struggled to come to terms with the ferocity of the Eagles opening attack.

After showing such promise in their early games the Keighley were clearly unable to understand just what had hit them. They were 24-0 down and deep in trouble when the hooter sounded for the end of the opening period.

Clearly away dressing room at Don Valley was not a happy place during the interval. For the first time Gary Moorby let his players have it with 'both barrels' to let them know he was not happy with their performance.

They took the opportunity to regroup and looked set to stage a real fight back when Lee Patterson powered forward. He was held up over the line and Cougars were denied another opportunity to put a score on the board.

Aston dropped a goal for the Sheffield side before Ramshaw made certain Cougars did not fail to score. He drove over from acting half with Wilkes adding the goal to his side's only score on a frustrating afternoon.

A further penalty from Brown and a try from Andy Raleigh for the Eagles completed the scoring.

After the game there were no excuses from the coach. "It was a bad day at the office. We didn't control the ball and allowed too many errors to creep into our game.

"We have built our success on doing the basics right and we just didn't have a foundation to build on. It was not a good performance, but we will bounce back -- and they still have to visit us," he said.
