The 2006 Winter Olympics venue at Sestriere, Italy, served as an inspirational backdrop for an overwhelming trials victory for Silsden's Dougie Lampkin on the first day of the seventh round of the FIM World Trials Championship.

Lampkin and his Radson Montesa left the rest of the field pondering on his skills after he completed the second of two laps totally without penalty, even overcoming breathing problems at the 2000-metre altitude of the trials course and major ski resort.

"That feels a lot better. I rode well on the first lap, but the second lap was even better. To win by such a large margin boosted my confidence but I have not lost sight of the fact that Takahisa Fujinami finished second again."

Graham Jarvis rode to an amazing ninth after undergoing medical tests after his mystery illness in France two weeks ago. The following day, however, Fujinami - Lampkin's main rival in his defence of the world title - got his revenge, reversing the finishing positions fromSaturday.

Lampkin was lucky to complete the second day after crashing his Radson Montesa on the rugged ninth section on his second lap.

"One minute everything was perfect, the next second I was on the ground with the bike on top of me," said Lampkin. "I have no feeling in my left leg at present. I just hope I have not done any damage."

Jarvis finish a fine sixth and is now fourth in the overall rankings.

Shaun Morris won the Junior Cup event and is now well on course to claim the title.
