A bullock had to be given a fireman's lift when it became a bit of a stick-in-the-mud. It had strayed over the Bradford-Leeds boundary and slipped down a steep bank into Carr Beck in Black Carr Woods, off Tyersal Lane. Four girls taking a stroll discovered the bullock and raised the alarm by going to the nearby Tyersal Hall Farm. Firemen pulled the bullock out with ropes, but had to use winding gear to haul the half-ton Fresian up the bank.

An attempt to dispel what he called "parental and public ignorance about the secondary modern school" was made by Mr F. J. Nicholson, headmaster of Lapage Boys' Secondary School, Bradford speaking at the school open day. At least 70 per cent of our future citizens were now educated in this type of school, said Mr. Nicholson. Skills learned in the primary schools were developed and new ones were added.
