Four City of Bradford swimmers are preparing themselves for two top events after gaining national qualifying times.

Alexander Belk (Baildon), Hannah Wharton (Thackley), Carey Senczyszyn (Ilkley) and Tierney Maude (Bradley) are in the top 40 in the country in their age groups, which entitles them to compete in the National Age Group Championships for those aged up to 14 (July 27-30) and the National Youth Championships for those aged 15 and over (July 31-August 3), both at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.

In fact, Alexander has posted some of the fastest times in the United Kingdom for a 12-year-old this year.

He will compete in the 11-14 years age group, while Carey and Hannah will be competing in the

11-13 years age group and

Tierney will line up in the Girls event.

City of Bradford Swimming Club, who are sponsored by the Yorkshire Building Society, are the competitive outlet for Bradford Council's training and coaching scheme.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, executive member for the environment, said: "This is a wonderful achievement and a real success for the council's coaching and development programme.

"I wish the young swimmers every success 'flying the flag' for the Bradford area in these prestigious championships."

Christine McCabe, swimming development manager (sport and lesiure service) said: "We are absolutely delighted to have four young swimmers achieving Cheesestrings Amateur Swimming Association national qualifying times on not just one but on several occasions at designated competitions."

As well as representing the City of Bradford club, the youngsters also swim for local clubs - Alex, Hannah and Carey for Bingley Swimming Club and Tierney for Skipton Dolphins.
