It was the final straw for Dick Dastardly and his band of rogues when Buzz Lightyear and the Incredible Hulk teamed up against them in Menston's 2003 scarecrow hunt.

This year's theme was good verses evil and more than 40 houses in the village had nasty and nice scarecrows hiding amongst their shrubs.

The massive event saw hundreds of treasure seeking youngsters and parents join forces to complete the scarecrow challenge.

Other scarecrows included Captain Hook, the Big Bad Wolf, the Invisible Man, Mike from Monster Inc, Darth Maul, Stuart Little and Cruella Devil.

Organiser Jo Jerome said: "It was fantastic, a real roaring success. Menston came alive with people looking for the scarecrows.

"We did raise a lot of money and we have got at least £2,000. I think at least 200 people took part.

"The winner of the best designed scarecrow competition was Lee Collins with Buzz Lightyear. They strung him up to make it look like he was flying with a big sign saying 'This isn't flying, this is falling with style'.

"The Where's Wally character was well hidden and the clue was 'he doesn't stand out in a crowd', everyone was puzzled and it took them a while to find him.

"All the children were really excited, there was a great atmosphere. Everyone was in their gardens pretending to be scarecrows to confuse the children."

The event last Saturday saw the scarecrow hunt start and finish at Menston Primary School where a big fayre was held with a wellie wanging contest and a barbecue.

The proceeds from the event will go to the Friends of Menston Primary School, which raises money for school equipment.

The scarecrow event will next be held in 2005.

The jolly scarecrow which was stolen prior to the event has been found in Menston Park badly beaten and with graffiti written across his chest. He was too ill to take part in the hunt.
