An Otley landlord helped fire and ambulance crews rescue an injured walker after hearing his cries for help.

Landlord of the Royalty Inn, Graham Phillips, was taking his dogs for a stroll on the Chevin at 6.30am on Tuesday when he heard a cry for help.

He went to investigate the noise and discovered a walker in his 60s had fallen whilst walking his dog and was unable to move.

He quickly ran back to his pub to contact the emergency services and waited for an ambulance crew to arrive.

The 30-year-old said: "It was about 6.30am, I had got up an hour earlier because we were heading out somewhere and I took the dogs to the Chevin.

"I heard a cry for help and went to see what it was and there was a man on the floor. It looked like he had broken his leg, so I ran back to the pub and called an ambulance.

"I met the ambulance at the pub and took them to him. I took his dog back to the pub and then I met the fire brigade and took them to the man as well.

"I just went to see what was wrong, I did the same as anyone else would have done."

Rawdon Fire Station sub officer Andy Fowler believes Mr Phillips deserves praise for his swift actions.

"A man in his mid-60s had fallen on some uneven ground and suffered a suspected broken ankle," he said.

"The landlord of the Royalty Inn in Yorkgate was walking his dog and found him on a path going through a wooded area of the East Chevin.

"The landlord called the ambulance and he waited at the pub entrance to take the ambulance to the injured man, first aid was administered and he was put on a stretcher.

"The ambulance staff realised he was a bit heavy so they called us to help them. The landlord again came back and waited for us.

"He deserves a big thank you. It was lucky for the man that he was there."

Mr Phillips directed the team to the injured walker, who is believed to be local, and took the man's dog back to the pub while he received treatment.

An spokesman for West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 6.43am and we sent a crew to the Royalty Inn.

"A male in his 60s had fallen and had a suspected fractured lower leg.

"We took him to Bradford Royal Infirmary."
