Manorlands was buzzing on Sunday as the annual garden party got into full swing.

The garden party is the single biggest fundraiser of the year for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder Care hospice and this year it did not disappoint, raising £18,000.

Organiser Sally Owthwaite said: "It was a terrific day really. Everything ran so smoothly and people really seemed to enjoy themselves.

"It was a scorching day, which I think affected the numbers coming through the gates as it was just too hot for some people. But we made up for that with massive sales of ice cream and refreshments.

"There was all kinds of entertainment and one patient at the hospice even brought two puppies along and people paid to pat them. There was a real sense of whatever we could do to raise money."

She added: "It costs £1.5 million to run Manorlands and we have to raise £885,000 each year, so the garden party is a good step towards that and we want to thank everyone who supported it."

The event featured a packed programme of activities and was officially opened by actor Ken Kitson from BBC TV's "Last of the Summer Wine".

Entertainment was provided during the afternoon by the Yorkshire Building Society Junior Brass Band, the Wilson School of Dance, Oakworth Morris dancers and the Keighley Amateurs' junior singers.

There was also a drum demonstration from the Timmons family and dance from Sarah Timmons. There were rides on Honda Goldwing motorcycles from Colin Appleyard's and magic from Steve B.

There were more than 40 stalls, including tombolas, raffles, jewellery, cards, books, bottles, white elephant, rugs and throws, linens and cakes.

Cedric Robinson, the Queen's guide for the cross-bay walk at Morcambe -- an event which has raised considerable funds for Manorlands over the years -- was there to sign copies of his new book.

Sally added: "We want to thank Reids book shop and Cedric Robinson -- £2 from every copy of the book sold will be donated to Manorlands, which is a great gesture and it was lovely to have the book signing at the garden party."
