Being able to wear high-heeled shoes and knee-length skirts is a long-awaited dream come true for Laura Campbell.

For the Crossflatts teenager, who had both legs amputated as a baby, has had new £20,000 cosmetic limbs fitted.

Complete with beauty spots, hair follicles and muscle definition, the new legs are so life-like they even have tendons and veins on the feet.

And the 17-year-old said she can also wriggle the big toes.

"They're beautiful legs," said an ecstatic Laura, who suffers from Thrombocytopenia Radial Aplasia - a rare syndrome, which can cause skeletal, blood or heart abnormalities.

"I'm so happy. The first time I saw them I couldn't say a word - I was in shock.

"The toenails look so real, it's amazing."

The legs include special buttons, one on each ankle to arch the foot to wear heels, and one at the top of each leg to fit the joints.

Mum Chrissy Campbell said the limbs signified a new beginning for Laura and the family.

"The old NHS legs could take us up to an hour to fit and she was in a lot of pain with them," she said.

"But Laura can do these all by herself within just a few minutes. Finally she will have her independence and her life will never be the same again.

"These legs are amazing, they are soft to the touch and feel like skin."

Laura had them fitted at Dorset orthopaedic clinic, near Bournemouth, and is going back next week to have a few adjustments made.

"There are a few teething problems at first but once everything is sorted I will just go back for yearly check-ups," said the former Bingley Grammar School pupil.

Laura's friends and family launched an appeal in April last year to provide her with state-of-the-art cosmetic limbs.

Last year, she e-mailed Heather Mills, wife of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, and was delighted to receive a 45-minute surprise call.

Just before Christmas 2002 Laura was given a huge donation of £11,500 from Skipton Properties which brought her fund to its target.
