TONY Speechley was in his element in the heatwave which accompanied Richard Addyman's Captain's Day at Skipton Golf Club to win the Division One prize with 40 points.

Like the swallows which brighten up the course from May onwards but head south for the winter, Speechley is a summer visitor to the club, heading home to his native Australia when the leaves start to fall. But usually not without a major prize or two from Skipton.

The sun on his back was a decent imitation of Aussie sun and the 10-handicapper responded with a highly consistent round, dropping three shots on the front nine and three on the back - all on the par threes - for 40 points.

Second place, also on 40 points but with an inferior back nine went to Ian Lovatt, who had more highs and lows with no less than three birdies - on the fifth, 12th and 13th, all with shots.

The usual rule of prizes only going to those who turned up for the awards ceremony was invoked, allowing David Cairns to take third place with 38.

The only eyebrow-raising score of the day won Division Two as 24-handicapper Paul Fenn starting inauspiciously with two double bogeys but then produced some fine golf to finish with 44 points.

Second place went to Tom Cherry who beat even younger Eddie Cowan into third place on the back nine after both returned 41 points. Cherry picked up birdies on the fourth and 14th while Cowan's round was a model of consistency.

The best gross came from Adrian Robertson's 74.

A special competition off yellow tees for juniors over 24 handicap was won by Chris Baines, with 42 points, with Robert Windle second with 38.
