Perfect weather made the 86th Arthington Show a fantastic event, according to organisers.

Hundreds of people flocked to Sunday's show, which was lacking cattle and sheep for the third year running.

Show jumping classes kicked off bright and early and continued throughout the day and there were more horse and pony classes to make up for the absence of cattle and sheep.

The dog show was a big success and adults and children alike were strutting their stuff with four legged friends in the show ring.

There was plenty of stalls and attractions to keep people entertained between classes.

The Rawdon-based England Baton Twirling Team, Northern Creation, was on hand to entertain and they wowed the crowds with their talents.

The eight girls, aged from 13 to 22-years-old, were performing outside for the first time twice during the day.

The team, the first northern team since 1991 to have been chosen to represent the UK, is due to take part in next month's world baton twirling championships in Barcelona, Spain.

Music was provided by the Knaresborough Accordion and Fiddle Society, which managed to play the rain clouds away.

The produce marquee drew a lot of attention with the superb entries from a high number of entrants.

Fruit, vegetables, flowers and baking were all on show as well as some entries from the younger show visitors.

Children put in their best efforts with models, paintings and poems and the judges had a very hard time deciding who should win prizes.

Show Secretary Sheila Dickinson was delighted with the turnout as well as the brilliant weather.

She said: "It really was perfect weather, I thought it might rain but it stayed perfect.

" I think that a few people got a little bit burnt too!

"I think that the whole day went very well and it was a good da.

" I think that people really enjoyed themselves.

"You never really know until the day whether everything goes to plan, but luckily it did this time.

"We had some different helpers this year and the whole thing ran very smoothly.

"We just want to say a big thank you to the sponsors, helpers, committee members, entrants and visitors and everyone else who made the day such a success.

"Now we'll start planning for next year!"

There were plenty of new visitors at the show, as well as the regular crowd.

Sandra Dean from Harrogate went to the show with her husband David and children Sarah, six and Cameron, four.

She said: "We have heard about it every year but I have never managed to come along.

"I am really impressed and it is a great day for a show like this.

"I was pleased when I saw that there was plenty for the children to do as well, I think they found it all very exciting."

David Keane, also from Harrogate, has been visiting the show for years.

He said: "I have to say I enjoy the show more with the cattle and sheep because there is more variation.

"I think it is a bit too horse orientated this year but it can't be helped.

"Hopefully things will be back to normal next year and it will be more like an agricultural show."

And Peter Marsh, of Guiseley, added his support for the show and said that he hoped it would continue for another 86 years and beyond.

"It's wonderful that shows like this have managed to continue in the light of all the foot and mouth restrictions," he said.

"Long may Arthington Show continue!"
