COOKRIDGE HALL: On a day of two great tournaments Tiger, Ernie, Sergio and the rest down at Royal St George's in Kent, took second billing to an event in north-west Leeds. The Cookridge Hall Seniors' Mixed Open attracted entries from as far away as Workington and the dark interior of deepest Lancashire, namely Stand, near Bury.

The day started with atrocious conditions but our local weather expert, Alan Murray, forecast a rapid clear up and fine weather for the remainder of the day. He was mostly correct but friends from Cumbria went out last and got caught in an almighty downpour as they teed off on the 16th.

The competition was a pairs (any combination) stableford better-ball, off three-quarters handicap, maximum of 24 for the men and 34 for the ladies.

Cookridge finished third place with a back in form Trevor Gurney and his wife Joan, scoring 43 points. In second place were Peter Routh and Graham Woodall from Howley Hall, also with 43 but a better back nine.

Pride of place went to the West Bradford pairing of Jeffrey Ward and Leslie Glover, who finished with a marvellous flourish over the closing holes, to come in with 45 points. At the presentation they said that Cookridge was the best Seniors event in their calendar and modestly tried to put their success down to that.

To complete the honours board on a day when everyone enjoyed the course, the golf and the camaraderie Tony Watson of Garforth won the prize for nearest the pin at the 6th and Cookridge's Clive Brook secured the longest drive on the 16th; a couple of longer efforts having strayed off the fairway.

Ben Rhydding: The July Medal played in fine sunny weather produced some excellent scores.

Division One - 1, D Allister 70-9-61; 2, T W Rockett 72-11 61; 3, J Allister 74-13-61; 4, P Kendall 75-12-63. Division Two - 1, B Soppitt 76-18-58; 2, A M Halliday 78-19-59; 3, C Rooney 82-22-60; 4, K Smith 80-19-61.

In a packed clubhouse Alan Parker, assisted by his wife Jan, presented prizes. This was followed by a barbecue and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Horsforth: Saturday's competition was the Rabbits' President's Day Stableford. Tony Smith, the Rabbits' President, and his wife, Christine, with a group of helpers, supplied drinks and refreshments to the players out on the course and in the evening presented their prizes to the winners at a cabaret dinner.

The President's Cup is played over two rounds and with the weather being as it was it proved to be gruelling 36 holes. The winner of the President's Cup was Barbara Cowling with a net score of 67 plus 71 for 138 with the runner-up being Andrew Walker 72 plus 73 for 145.
