Three men have been locked up for their part in scenes of "vicious and sustained violence" in Shipley town centre.

Bradford Crown Court heard how an incident inside Lloyd's Bar spilled out into the market square where two victims were punched and kicked during the disturbance in the early hours of July 28 last year.

Paul Gaunt, 18, of Southdown Road, Baildon, was sent to a young-offender institution for 18 months after pleading guilty to wounding and affray.

Lewis Brook, 22, of West Royd Drive, Windhill, admitted affray and was jailed for 15 months, while Wesley Roetteis, 21, of Glenwood Avenue, Shipley, admitted a similar offence and was jailed for nine months. Sentencing them, Judge Rodney Grant said anyone viewing CCTV footage of the incident could not fail to be "appalled" by the level of vicious and sustained violence used.

John Sleightholme, prosecuting, said the video evidence showed Gaunt kicking a man called Carl Hunt five times to his head and body.

Earlier, a man called Craig McDougal had tried to stop the incident developing but he was knocked unconscious by a "big punch" from Gaunt to the side of his head.

Mr McDougal was kicked while he was unconscious on the ground and was later found to have suffered a fractured cheekbone, which had to have a plate inserted. The three accused were identified with the aid of the CCTV footage.
