Undercliffe skipper Martin Kellaway wants Chris Taylor to do well for the rest of the season - but not too well.

The fear is that if the opener continues to score heavily for Yorkshire Seconds - he got another 150 on Wednesday - and indeed in the Specialist Ducting Supplies Bradford League First Division, then he will be called up for the county's first-team and therefore be unavailable for Undercliffe.

"It's a selfish point of view, but hopefully he will be around for us a bit longer because he can help us challenge Pudsey Congs for the rest of the season," said Kellaway.

As for Taylor's Yorkshire prospects, his club captain said: "Chris' time will come. He just has to be patient. He is a great fielder and has a lot to offer."

Second-placed Undercliffe handed leaders Congs their first league defeat of the season last Saturday - a result that Kellaway called "good for the league as much as our ourselves".

It reduced the gap between Congs and Undercliffe to a mere seven points, Kellaway adding: "If Congs had won last week it would have needed something quite dramatic for them not to have won the title.

"With 11 matches to go it would have been hard for anyone to have caught Congs with them being some 20 points clear."

Undercliffe's notable triumph last weekend was a further reminder of their recent fine form.

Kellaway said: "It was a good performance. We have been playing really well for the last month after a couple of poor displays in June.

"We tend to play well against Congs anyway. We were on top earlier in the season against them when it rained, but there are games against other sides this season where we have really struggled.

"However, we are a far better side now than we were earlier in the season, and everyone knows their role.

"Chris Taylor and Jaffer Nazir may have grabbed most of the headlines, but earlier in the season Andy Walker was fabulous in the middle order and also did well with the ball, and Greg Lambert has been fantastic as Jaffer's new-ball partner.

"He hasn't taken the volume of wickets that Jaffer has - Jaffer must be nearing 50 now - but earlier in the season he was fighting with Guy Saxton for the right to open the bowling with Jaffer.

"Mark Gill has come through a sticky period with the bat and got a good 30 at Cleckheaton and held things together last week against Congs, and Toby Drummond got a vital 60 against Yeadon when we were struggling."

Tomorrow Undercliffe are at home to Woodlands in one of the top games, and Kellaway said: "Woodlands are a good side. I expected them to challenge earlier in the season, and I feel they still have something going for them with all the good players they have."

Congs have the small matter of a home derby against improving St Lawrence tomorrow as they bid to get back on the straight and narrow, while on Sunday the front-runners are at cup specialists Mirfield.

Second-from-bottom Yeadon, meanwhile, have a tough weekend ahead of them as they bid to climb out of a relegation place. They are at Cleckheaton tomorrow and at home to Woodlands on Sunday.

Bottom-club Gomersal are at home to Spen Victoria tomorrow, while third-from-bottom Idle must be optimistic of picking something up from both their matches - at East Bierley tomorrow and at home to Farsley on Sunday.

The Second Division throws up another jaffa of a fixture tomorrow - Bankfoot at home to Bradford & Bingley.

They are equal second on 74 points, eight behind leaders Saltaire, who are at home to Hartshead Moor.
