The city of Bradford last night paid tribute to its Special Olympians.

There was a civic reception for the area's five athletes who brought home 16 medals from the World Games in Dublin last month.

Helen Burton won a gold and three bronzes and fellow powerlifters Andrew Hurst, two silvers and two bronzes, and Simon Waggett a silver and three bronzes.

Swimmer Heidi Karaba also notched three third places and ten-pin bowler Graeme Cunningham won a silver medal.

All this flashing of metal made Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Graham Thornton feel quite inadequate.

He laughed: "I am amazed at the number of gongs - I only have one and I think I will take it off."

Coun Thornton added: "Bradford has had a lot of problems over the years, but the way that you five have performed is most impressive."
