young golfers are getting in the swing to put the greens into Greenhead High School.

Students from years seven and eight at the Utley school received expert tuition from PGA pro Simon Hotham. He put the youngsters through the basics of getting the right swing and making good contact with the ball.

The session was the brainchild of English teacher and keen golfer Brenda Clarkson, who invited Simon and Jaz Altham, from the Asian Golf Society. The aim of the day was to drive the enthusiasm of young golfers and to spot any Tiger Woods in the making.

Mrs Clarkson said: "I met Jaz during an event at St Ives, in Bingley, and he said he would like to come into school to teach children the game and help unite communities through sport, which I thought would be ideal for us. He then asked Simon, who kindly offered to come along and offer his expert tuition and advice.

"It's still in its infancy but if it goes well we would like to develop a golf club and widen it to other schools with a golf league and we are looking at possible sources of funding."

After practising indoors with plastic balls, the young golfers had the chance to put their new skills to the test with a competition.
