Cub Scouts appalled at the state of their local park have put pen to paper to vent their disgust.

Members of the 18-strong 6th Keighley (Oakworth) pack have written to the Keighley News outlining their concerns.

They say that Oakworth Park is plagued by litter and vandalism, and lacks facilities for young people.

The Cubs have drawn a comparison with Haworth Park, which they say has more litter bins and is better maintained.

Pack leader Val Wright said: "We had been out on a tracking activity and ended up walking through the park, and the Cubs were horrified at the state of it. They decided to do a comparison with Haworth.

"Park rangers came along to talk to the Cubs about the issue and explained that they do the best they can."

District councillor Glen Miller welcomed the Cubs' project.

He said: "It is good that they have brought this to our attention. If there is a vast difference in standards between the two parks, it is something that I would like to take up with the relevant council department.

"There is some play equipment in Oakworth Park, and a youth shelter, but there have been problems caused by some young people -- not locals, but from outside the village. The local youngsters are trying to get a skate park, a situation mirrored in several other parts of the district, but there is the fear that these could also be a magnet for undesirables."

Fellow ward councillor Kris Hopkins -- Bradford Council's executive member for community -- also praises the Cubs' efforts.

He said: "I welcome young people putting pen to paper in this way.

"The council does need to keep the park tidy, but it is also up to people who use the park to pay a little respect.

"A new bin has been placed there and, although we do have some very conscientious people, it is about educating others to dispose of rubbish properly."
