When funnyman Sir Norman Wisdom steps on to the first tee for a celebrity golf tournament this weekend, he'll be hoping only his ball is lost in the rough.

For the 88-year-old comedian is being kitted out in a pair of £5,000 diamond studded cufflinks by Shipley-based Phillip Stoner Jewellery for the 18-hole contest.

And the unique silver cufflinks, which depict the wise-cracking octogenarian in his trademark cap, are going under the hammer at the annual Sir Norman Wisdom Golf Classic tournament on Sunday.

Craftsmen from the jewellery specialist spent 88 hours designing and manufacturing the cufflinks which are expected to fetch thousands of pounds for several children's charities.

With intricate engravings of Sir Norman's face and smile, his cap is inlaid with round diamonds and is fastened to the sleeve by a golf-ball shaped retainer.

The tournament, being held at Carden Park in Chester, is being attended by other celebrities including former football star Frank Worthington, snooker aces Dennis Taylor and Willie Thorne and skier Eddie 'the eagle' Edwards.

The cufflinks will be auctioned alongside Sir Norman's golf clubs and other star memorabilia at an evening dinner after the tournament.

Phillip Stoner Jewellery director, Chris Stoner, pictured, said it was a privilege to manufacture the cufflinks.

"We were delighted to be asked to produce a timeless piece of jewellery for such a timeless star," he said. "Our on-site designers and manufacturers have crafted the piece by hand and ensured the cufflinks are the spitting image of Sir Norman.

"Sir Norman has seen the cufflinks and is chuffed to bits with them."

The jewellery firm has a shop at Shipley's Arndale Centre and branches in Halifax and Pudsey.

Sir Norman said: "After all these years in comedy I've never once had my face engraved in anything, let alone sterling silver!

"I think Phillip Stoner Jewellery did a fabulous job as the cufflinks are smashing. Lets hope they raise a few laughs, and some cash, for charity on Sunday."

Italian nursery and toy manufacturer Chicco is sponsoring the day which has been organised by Celebrity Golf Tour which has raised more than £2 million for charities through other golfing events.

Celebrity Golf Tour founder, Paul Gaskell, said: "Our charity events and auctions have always gone well and this year we thought we'd have something a little more unusual on offer.

"Sir Norman Wisdom is a great entertainer and has been a household favourite for years.

"We're sure the cufflinks will go down a treat among his fans."
