Keighley had another poor night in the Bradford Scratch League's first division on Friday, losing 6-2 at home to Baildon.

In the Third Division Skipton had a useful 7-1 win over West Bowling and are now three points ahead of Bradford at the top, with just two matches to go. Silsden are in third place after beating The Manor 6-2, while Branshaw lost ground as they went down 6-2 at Headley.

Bracken Ghyll are top of the Fourth Division after an 8-0 home win over struggling Phoenix Park - courtesy of two walkovers. Riddlesden won 6-2 at Ben Rhydding to stay in touch, but they are five points behind with only one match remaining.

Holder Richard Wheatley successfully retained the Bingley St Ives Scratch Salver, but was made to fight all the way by fellow club member Jamie Mountain.

Wheatley shot a 69 in the morning and 71 in the afternoon for a 140 total, but Mountain matched that with two rounds of 70. Mountain then birdied the first play-off hole, the 282-yard par four 1st - but lost it to a superb eagle two by Wheatley.

Silsden's Clare Starkie had the best gross score with a 75 in the Bradford & District Ladies Championships at Shipley on Wednesday. Qualifiers for the matchplay round yesterday were: 75 Clare Starkie (Silsden); 78 Sue Swaine (Northcliffe), Helen Butterfield (Bingley St Ives); 79 Adele Mitchell (Keighley); 81 Linda Ireland (Shipley); 83 Val Exley (Shipley), Angela Snodgrass (Shipley); 85 Sheila Hyde (Bradford). The draw was: Starkie v Hyde, Ireland v Mitchell, Butterfield v Exley, Snodgrass v Swaine. The semi-finals and final will be played today.

Bracken Ghyll - Patrick Lee held his Captain's Day in superb conditions, with the course looking at its best. The golf was of the highest standard and closely contested. The eventual winner was Nick Cook, who collected 38 Stableford points, with Duncan Wood on 37 and Nick Page on 36. The golf was followed by an evening prize presentation, buffet and disco, including a raffle in aid of "Children with Leukaemia".

The Seniors' Captain's Day was played in perfect golfing conditions. The Senior Captain's Shield was won by Stan Fawcett with 40 points from John Williams on 38 and George Burrell on 37. There were five players tied on 36, and after countback Charlie Cox and John Dalglish took fourth and fifth spots.

Monday saw the first Bracken Ghyll Seniors v Juniors match, in which the lads triumphed over the granddads by 3 matches to 2 and 217 total Stableford points to 211. The match was so much enjoyed by all concerned that it was unanimously agreed to make this the first of a regular series.

Alastair Houldsworth recorded another hole-in-one at the 7th hole at Bingley St Ives in the St Ives Salver. In the same competition James Marshall shot seven under his handicap in the afternoon round. This young star has gone from the 10/11 spot in the 8-15 team in June to a handicap of five.

The President's Shoot, on Sunday, was enjoyed by 70 competitors, playing in a 4BBBl format. The winners with 43 points were Roger Mitchell and Cheryl Brown. Runners up were Dennis Marklew and Keith Jowitt with 42 points. The remaining pairs were drawn at random in to teams of four. The winning teams both had 80 points. First were Cameron Dawson, John Bibby, Paul Pettit and Mike Cooper. The other team was Ray Maddison, Russell Newton, Terry Bowler and Thomas Rowan.
