The children and young people of our area are taking the lead in raising awareness of the amount of litter and vandalism on our streets and parks.

Three stories in this week's issue highlight the impassioned views of young people about the need to keep their neighbourhoods clean and provide new play and activity facilities.

The children at St Andrew's Primary School took to the streets to survey the amount of litter and other problems within the immediate area. They reported a mixed reaction. For example, they recorded that where a street had CCTV cameras it was neat and tidy. But just around the corner out of camera range they found evidence of drug and alcohol abuse.

Teacher Shirley Davids says the exercise has helped them take a bit of control over their environment and made them aware of their surroundings.

The grime busting anti-litter campaign launched by Keighley's MP Ann Cryer shows all the signs of being a huge success - thanks once again to the children and their teachers. Entries for a poster competition have been magnificent, says Mrs Cryer, and she is delighted with the way the children have grasped the issue.

Members of the 18-strong 6th Keighley (Oakworth) pack of Cub Scouts have also let the public know of their deep concerns about Oakworth Park.

They were out on a tracking activity which took them through their park and they were horrified at the state of it. In each case they are asking for answers and action.

In reality it is not a new problem and for many years those in positions of power and the law enforcement agencies have struggled to come up with long term solutions - an unenviable task.

In the meantime, we should all adopt the view of Mrs Cryer that dropping litter is tantamount to anti-social behaviour and it is time for action.

A handful of prosecutions and accompanying headlines would be a start. Look at the impact of the recent case, not that far from here, of a woman fined for dropping a cigarette end.

The public reaction from some quarters to such action would be predictable. But it is not a popularity poll.

It is a case of tackling a basic social issue which is having a wide ranging negative impact on all our lives.
