A 114-year-old club dest-royed by fire in the Bradford riots is opening its doors again.

Girlington Conservative Club had to be completely rebuilt after a petrol bomb destroyed the old building in Roundthorn Place on July 7, 2001.

But two years later, the club has risen from the ashes with a new building on Leaven-thorpe Lane, off Thornton Road.

Club president David Parrott said: "At last it has happened. We are ready to welcome our members back again."

The new club, which cost £400,000 to build, will open to the public tomorrow.

But existing members will get a sneak preview tonight.

The venue, paid for by the insurance cash and a loan from the brewery, boasts more facilities than the previous venue.

A lounge, function room, self-contained snooker room, office and a committee room doubling up as a television lounge are all on offer at the new club.

"It's beautiful and it provides a nice focal point for the area," said Mr Parrott.

The club now hopes to attract new members after many left in the aftermath of the fire.

"Before the fire we had around 200 members. That dropped to 150 but we now have about 100 new applications," said Mr Parrott.

He said the initial re-opening of the club was to be kept low-key.

"We are going to see how things go and have an official opening later. William Hague has already said he would like to do it but we're not sure when that will be."

Councillor Elaine Byrom (Con, Clayton) who plans to apply for membership at the new club, said: "I think it is absolutely wonderful that the Conservative club has been able to open again. It has been a long hard road for them and they must be feeling very satisfied. I share in their hopes for the future."
