A scoreboard is being installed at a cricket club in memory of a Bradford cricketer who died during a match.

Players from across the district are taking part in a memorial match at Queensbury Cricket Club for Richard Smith on Sunday.

The charity match will raise funds for a £12,000 commemorative scorebox at the ground, which will be dedicated to the 29-year-old.

The Queensbury player had scored 98 not out for the Trinity Insurance Halifax League club when he left the field complaining of chest pains and sickness.

A female spectator later found him collapsed on the clubhouse floor during the match on June 14.

Efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead at Calderdale Royal Infirmary.

Mr Smith, who also played for Victoria Rangers Rugby League Club in Eccleshill, died of a heart attack, echoing the death of his own father 18 years before.

His father David collapsed and died of a heart attack when he was 47 while bowling for Crossflatts.

Richard Smith's widow, Vicky, 23, of Wharncliffe Road, Eccleshill, said the memorial match showed the respect her husband had at the club and across the district.

"This is a fitting tribute and a lovely thing for the club to do. Richard would have been really proud," she said.

"I'm coping as well as I can do and I'm taking each day as it comes. It's not getting any easier and I'm still feeling raw.

"But I'm really pleased that we've got so many good friends and relatives to do such a lovely thing for us."

Mrs Smith said money from the event would also be donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Players from Queensbury, Bridgeholme - the opponents on the day of the tragedy - and Eldwick and Gilstead cricket clubs are appearing for the Vicky Smith XI in the match.

And players from various sides in the Trinity Insurance Halifax League will represent the opposition in the 40 over a side game.

Queensbury club captain and Mr Smith's close friend Phil Sharples said: "We've got an old scoreboard at the moment and we wanted a lasting memorial to Richard.

"It seemed appropriate to get money for this venture which will be a permanent feature of the ground."

Mr Sharples said Trinity Insurance and various businesses across the district have donated money for the scoreboard.

There will also be stalls, a bouncy castle, a bucking bronco and refreshments during the match.

It starts at the club's ground in Old Guy Road at 2pm and all are welcome from 1pm.
