Shipley police officers will be targeting Saltaire on Wednesday and giving residents anti-crime advice. Detective Inspector Trevor Gasson said the village was chosen because of a ten per cent rise in burglaries in the past few months - particularly ones where thieves let themselves in through unlocked doors.

"There will be about 12 officers taking part in the high visibility operation and the main aim is to educate people about crime prevention," he said, "We will be trying people's front doors and if they're not locked, we'll be going inside and warning the inhabitants that we could easily have been a sneak-in thief.

"We'll be warning them about leaving bags and keys near their doors."

The police carried out a similar campaign earlier this year and found that many people had not locked their doors. "We did a similar operation in Baildon and we found that our presence helped deter criminal activity that evening," said Det Insp Gasson.

The situation will be monitored over the next few months.
