A Bradford golf club is seeking new headquarters after agreeing to sell to a developer wanting to build a business park which could lead to thousands of new jobs.

West Bowling Golf Club members have decided by an overwhelming majority to sell the scenic fields and club house to Leeds-based Landmark Development Ltd.

Higher offers from two other developers, Younger Homes (Northern) Ltd and Paul Lead Associates, were rejected.

It is understood that Landmark made the lowest offer of about £8.75 million for the land off Rooley Lane.

The offer is subject to the company getting consent, however, after planning applications for the business park were called in by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott for a public inquiry.

In the past members have been split over the issue, with some wanting to move and others forming a preservation society because they wanted to stay.

The extraordinary meeting of the club - held in private - was attended by 210 of the club's 350 members.

In the first vote, a motion to stay on the site was defeated by 66 per cent to 34 per cent of the members attending.

A second motion to sell the land to Landmark, subject to planning permission, and seek another site was passed by 78 per cent to 22 per cent.

Club captain Andrew Frost said: "We are now actively seeking to relocate."

Landmark director Richard Morton said: "We are very happy they have decided to accept our offer. A large majority voted for it."

The proposed business park - including offices, a hotel, B&Q superstore and 45 houses - is expected to create at least 5,000 jobs.

It would swallow up fields at the Club and put its 300-year-old listed clubhouse on a roundabout.

Mr Morton said members had obviously realised the company had been working for a long time on its plans and was a considerable way forward.
