Hundreds of youngsters have had fun after school as part of a scheme aimed at broadening their horizons and boosting their self-confidence.

Eight primary schools in the Manningham area have been celebrating the success of the £90,000 project, which raised self-esteem and offered a huge range of activities.

Children aged between eight and 11 enjoyed sport, art, gardening, dance, clay modelling, football, swimming and computer clubs for an hour every day.

The scheme, which was started three years ago with a grant from the National Lottery's New Opportunities Fund, aimed to help hundreds of children improve their motivation by giving them the opportunity to go on trips and take part in activities they might not otherwise have been able to do.

The project involved schools working together - for example, three schools linking up at one site for the computer clubs.

Susan Clark, head teacher of Miriam Lord Community Primary School, which took part, said the interaction between children from different schools was positive and had prepared them for moving on to secondary school.

And project co-ordinator Julie Tolley said: "Bringing children from different schools together has been really good for their self-esteem and motivation. It's been lovely, and all the children have shone in their own way."

As well as regular after-school activities, the youngsters were also taken on trips to Bradford's City Farm and Bretton Hall Sculpture Park near Wakefield

The schools celebrated the success of the scheme by organising a party.

The other schools involved were Springwood Primary, Green Lane Primary, Iqra Community, Miriam Lord Community, Westbourne, Lilycroft Primary, Margaret MacMillan and Atlas.
