Illegal fireworks and unroadworthy cars were seized as trading standards officials blitzed Keighley and Bingley.

Enforcement agencies found six unroadworthy cars for sale, as well 60 illegal fireworks.

Officers from West Yorkshire Trading Standards, West Yorkshire Police, Vehicle Inspectorate and Customs and Excise joined forces for the three-day operation.

The operation focused on second-hand car dealers, rogue traders, illegal fireworks, and shopkeepers who sell fireworks to children.

Trading standards officers caught two people wearing Council contractors' uniforms. They were driving a van containing tarmac and building materials but were not Council workers.

British Gas contractor signs were seized from a person claiming to be working for the company, but who was not an employee.

Forecourt inspections were carried out at garages and officers found six unroadworthy cars for sale in Keighley.

The cars are now prohibited from sale and investigations will continue against the traders. A stolen vehicle was also seized in Keighley. Trades description offences were identified, such as vehicles described as having one previous owner when they had two.

One trader was found to be selling a vehicle with false mileage.

Offences under the Trade Descriptions Act potentially carry a substantial fine and a possible prison sentence.

Road checks were put in place on the A629 Aire Valley Trunk Road and 161 vehicles were stopped and inspected.

Councillor Graham Clarke, chairman of West Yorkshire Joint Services, said: "Indivi-duals wearing bogus uniforms and carrying bogus signs cause me great concern and I am delighted that this operation was able to stop this happening in this instance."

Twenty-five retailers were visited and 60 illegal fireworks were seized in Shipley.
