Speeding Bradford motorists are to be warned by two new high-tech signs due to be installed at crash blackspots.

Bradford South Area Committee has approved plans to put up vehicle-activated signs at Oakenshaw and Queensbury following concerns from residents about drivers going too fast and a bad record of crashes.

The signs flash up a message if vehicles go by travelling above a certain speed.

The sign in Cleckheaton Road at Oakenshaw will be used to enforce speed, and the one at Green Lane in Queensbury will warn of a hazard.

The report said many vehicles entering Bradford along Cleckheaton Road travelled faster than the 30mph limit and latest figures showed there had been six crashes causing 13 injuries at the junction with Dyehouse Road in the last five years.

Green Lane residents felt vehicles going towards Halifax were travelling too fast on a bend, with some drivers losing control and damaging nearby houses.

A spokesman for Bradford Council's Traffic and Highways Department said the sign at Oakenshaw would be set so that drivers travelling faster than the speed limit would be flashed the message "30mph - slow down".

The one in Queensbury would say "Bend - slow down".

The spokesman said the signs were very useful in combating excess speed, showing reductions on average of eight or nine miles per hour.

Council workers will monitor speeds at the two sites before and after the signs are installed.

The signs, which are due to be installed in the next few months, will cost about £9,000. The cost will be met from the Council's Minor Signing Budget.

Councillor Michael Walls (Con, Queensbury) said he had been contacted by Green Lane residents. "I requested that traffic engineers look at the area and come up with a scheme to try to solve the problems," he said.

Keighley Area Committee has approved plans to use mobile versions of the signs, which will be moved every few months.
