A Bradford-based supermarket chain has vowed to investigate a Muslim man's claim that he found bacon in their vegetarian potato salad.

Morrisons are looking into the allegation that their own brand potato salad contained pieces of bacon.

Omer Bhatti said he was physically sick after he tucked into the salad as eating pig meat is forbidden according to Islam.

The 25-year-old said he bought the food from Morrisons at the Victoria Shopping Centre on Thornton Road on about November 26.

"The salad said 'suitable for vegetarians' and I checked the ingredients," he said.

But when Mr Bhatti, of Heaton, put the salad in a sandwich a few days later he said he knew something was not right.

"When I ate it I could feel something chewy. After a few mouthfuls I pulled it out and it was a bit of bacon."

He said he checked the container and there seemed to be more bacon in it.

Mr Bhatti, who works in a nursing home, said he always avoided touching pork products when giving residents their food and the find had really upset him.

"I am just double-checking everything now," he said.

Mr Bhatti said he bought the sealed tub of potato salad from the chiller cabinet in the supermarket and it was not the variety made in store.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: "The gentleman contacted us on December 1 when we asked him to return the packaging with what he believes is a piece of bacon so we can carry out a thorough investigation."

In September another Muslim Morrisons customer, Amreen Mughar, said she was outraged when she found ham in a tuna mayonnaise sandwich which had been made in the firm's Thornbury store.

But supermarket bosses said that none of the sandwiches made at their salad bar could be guaranteed as suitable for vegetarians.
