Bradford Toy Library provides an "invaluable" service, according to the treasurer of an autism support group.

Tanya Wormald, from Bradford and District Autism Support Group, said it would be a huge loss if the facility had to shut.

The Telegraph & Argus Save Our Play Appeal is raising cash to try to keep the toy library open and make sure thousands of children with disabilities and special needs can still have access to its specialist toys.

The registered charity which runs the St Luke's Hospital-based library is desperately short of money and may have to close in March unless more funding is found.

So far the appeal has raised £9,051.50 towards the £12,000 needed to keep the facility open for at least another 12 months, during which time it is hoped more funding can be found.

Mrs Wormald said the group's collection of books about autism was held at the library so more parents could have access to them.

"I think the toy library is a fantastic service - it was there when I needed it. I would like to see it continue. The books for parents are invaluable to understand about the disability and not have to spend £20 or £30 on each one."

She said it was very helpful that members of the support group - which has about 400 people on its mailing list - could direct people to the toy library.

"I think there would be a massive hole if it closed. Bradford has a lot of children with disabilities and usually the mum cannot work so their income is lower than other families. The specialist toys are really expensive."

She said she could not imagine what life would be like without the toy library and the support from the staff there was crucial.

"That's the biggest part of it and it's something you cannot put a price on."

The support group marks its 15th year in 2004 and is planning to widen its services.

Donations have been flooding in, but more are needed to reach the target. To help, send cheques directly to the T&A or pay in to the special bank account.
