A parent-led support group for Drugs addicts and their families has moved into its own office.

Keighley Families Against Drugs (K-FAD) relocated to a new office at 26 Devonshire Street on Monday after nine months of searching for new premises.

The group, which has been running for more than five years, moved into its first town centre base in August 2001.

But the new office is the first time K-FAD, which became a charity last year, has had its own site. Funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation has donated £4,900 towards the rent.

It was one of 74 charities across Yorkshire to benefit from £526,857 of funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation.

Founder member Elaine Wise said: "I feel quite candidly that once we get the office running we will be working even more and more."

K-FAD was set up in June 1998 following the death of five young people in eight weeks in drug-related incidents. The group was designed to complement the work of other agencies in the town.

It is a support and action group to help family and friends of drug users, ex-users and suspected users. It offers individual help, support group meetings, personal development and a library of information.

Elaine said: "We can help because we have the empathy. That is our main thing. We understand how families feel. We know exactly where these mums and dads are coming from."

The group has produced a booklet of stories and poems by families and users with an introduction by Keighley MP Ann Cryer. And volunteers have talked to more than 4,000 children across schools in four years.

Other money, including from QED and Band of Hope, has helped to fund the charity.

Stephen Robinson, regional manager for Yorkshire, Lloyds TSB Foundation, said: "We have supported 312 charities this year and the money has gone right to the heart of local communities, helping to make a positive difference where it is really needed."

The group is also looking for new volunteers, committee members and trustees.

Its office is open each Monday and Wednesday from 10am-noon and Thursdays from 2-4pm. There are also support group meetings every Monday from 4-6pm.
