TWO teenagers will be jetting off to Mexico this summer to take part in an international Guide project.

Clare Johnston, 15, of Scargill, near Kettlewell, and Carly Metcalfe, 16, of Chapel Lane, Grassington, have never been abroad before so the 18-day trip will be quite an adventure.

The two members of Grassington Guides were chosen back in February and since then the two girls have been frantically trying to raise £1,500 to fund the trip.

They have worked together organising raffles, running a stall at the Dickensian Festival and even dog sitting. And their efforts have paid off as both have under £500 left to raise.

Carly said: "It's quite scary because it's starting to get close but at the same time it's exciting."

The girls, along with 10 other Guides from the North Yorkshire West district and four adults, will travel to Mexico in August and spend three days in the capital city.

They will get to meet Guides from all over the world - some of whom will not speak English - and will work together on a social project looking at the problem of street children in Mexico.

They will also be an opportunity to swim with dolphins in Acapulco before heading home.

The pair say they have had tremendous support from people from all over Grassington as well as from friends and family.

They will be holding a coffee morning at Amber Cottage, Kettlewell tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am which will feature a grand raffle and a cake stall.

Anyone wishing to sponsor the project can contact April Martin, the guider who is in charge of the trip, on 01765 601218.
