Parents in Cottingley fear for the safety of their children as they cross the road to the village school.

Jane Forster, who has two children at Cottingley Village Primary School, said it was only a matter of time before there was a serious incident in Cottingley Cliffe Road.

She is the organiser of a 170-signature petition calling for a school crossing patrol on Cottingley Cliffe Road and a review of its junction with Cottingley Moor Road, which has been presented to Bradford Council.

She said: "It is only a matter of time before we have a serious incident where someone is seriously injured or killed on that road.

"I feel the situation is being made worse because of the Bingley relief road.

"People are using the road to get to Bradford to avoid the congestion at Saltaire."

There is already a crossing on Cottingley Moor Road but parents who use the Sun pub for parking are having difficulty as Cottingley Cliffe Road has no facility for crossing.

Mrs Forster said she had been told by Bradford Council officers that priority would be given to installing school crossings where children walk to school unaccompanied.

But she said this created a Catch 22 situation, as "no one in their right minds" would let children cross the road alone.

Head teacher Christina Briggs, said she and the governors supported the campaign.

"The traffic around the school has been an on-going concern since we moved into this building," she said.

"We have fought tirelessly to provide safe routes to school for the children.

"The parents, governors and school have worked together on this.

"We ask for a school crossing every year as part of our improvement plan."

A Council spokesman said: "We are looking into the traffic implications for Cottingley New Road, Cottingley Moor Road and Cottingley Cliffe Road as a result of the opening of the Bingley relief road.

"This includes the safety of the junction near the Sun."
