Everyone was delighted that Carl Shutt got off to a winning start as manager with the 2-1 midweek win at Worksop Town, but no one more so than club captain Carl Serrant.

The former Oldham and Newcastle United defender had been the caretaker manager for the previous three matches but he can settle back into the side and focus on playing to the best of his considerable abilities.

"I'm definitely going to concentrate more on my own game and I've been looking forward to doing that," said Serrant.

"It's nice to have someone in so quickly and even better that Carl has started with a great win away from home.

"I don't know much about him apart from what I've read about him when he was playing.

"It's the first time I have come across him in my career. A few of the lads know him personally already and that will help. He has certainly made a good impression on the whole squad.

"The lads were really enthusiastic about the game on Tuesday and they responded to the way he asked them to play.

"It's a shame we have no game this weekend because it would have been nice to try to keep the momentum going, but at least that will give the new manager a chance to work with the lads and take his first training session."

The Worksop game was a typical one for the talented and versatile Serrant.

He started in his regular position of left back but ended up playing in the centre of defence after injuries to Dean Jones and substitute Michael Naylor.

"I was moved about again but I don't mind that, I just want to be on the pitch playing in the side for full games.

"I didn't want to take the managers' role on but didn't mind helping out for just a few games.

"It is hard enough concentrating on getting your own game right and being skipper without the added burden of wondering if a change of tactics is needed and what time to introduce the substitutes. I think we have been doing well for four or five weeks without getting the results we deserved.

"We were defending all right and working hard in midfield but we didn't seem to have the cutting edge.

"If the Worksop game is anything to go by that will change now.

"We have lost Andy Hayward after he was sold to Stalybridge Celtic and he was one of our more reliable scorers.

"But Jason Maxwell was on target and Steve Oleksewycz is back in the fold now and eager to impress. We're all hoping Robbie Painter will be fit for the rest of the season as well."
