Avenue won their second game under new manager Carl Shutt with a second-half strike from Craig Smith that was worthy of winning any game at any level as they beat red rose rivals Ashton United for the first time at Horsfall Stadium. The boss saw his side go in front in his first home game in charge but they were pegged back by the Lancastrians early in the sec-ond half. The visitors had a goal ruled out before Smith's wonder goal."I'm delighted with the players and to get two wins to start off with is better than I could have expected," said Shutt."Ashton are a team of big players and they play for the set-pieces, that was the only time they had us under any pressure. But I felt we played the better football and though they had a good start to the second half the longer it went on the more I could see us win-ning it."Our keeper dealt with their long throw-ins and the odd free-kick, he commanded his area well and claimed all the high balls. I was a bit dis-appointed with their goal be-cause it bounced a couple of times before it was scraped in."I thought we had chances to clear it before they scored, but we are a young team and I'm not going to fall out with any-one who makes a mistake as long as they are not doing it time after time."Avenue were not troubled until the 13th minute when Ashton forced throw-ins from near the cor-ners on both flanks and sent in some exceptional deliveries. Peter Carty got a three yard header on one but Avenue keeper Andrew Britton made a reaction save.Just after the half-hour the home side got the opener. Stephen Oleksewycz timed his run to perfection and helped Andy Quinn's though ball on with his chest, having turned his marker in the same motion he slid a shot under the advancing keeper.Ten minutes into the second half Avenue failed to clear their lines and as the ball was sent through the six-yard box Danny White stole in beyond the back post to run it into the net from a tight an-gle.Paul Garvey had the ball in the Avenue net midway through the second half, from a Craig Fleury long throw with Britton desperately trying to claw it out but the assistant referee flagged the forward off-side.Smith's superb effort in the 83rd minute followed a foul on Oleksewycz. Serrant passed the free-kick into Smith and without breaking stride he rocketed the ball past static Ashton keeper Andy Johnston from 30 yards.
