A coroner has called for a pedestrian crossing at a set of traffic lights after a pensioner was run over and killed last year.

But Bradford Council says two are already planned for the area and work is due to start soon.

At an inquest yesterday, Bradford Coroner Roger Whittaker said: "It is clear that at this very busy junction there are not enough places for pedestrians to cross safely.

"The local authority should now take action to remedy this dangerous situation. To prevent similar fatalities in the future there should be a pelican crossing."

Mrs Nora Spreckley, 82, died when she stepped out in front of a skip truck at the lights on Killinghall Road, Undercliffe, Bradford, last October. They had just turned to green and the truck started to turn right into Harrogate Road when it hit Mrs Spreckley, who was in the driver's blind spot.

Witness William Berrie, of Rodley, said: "I saw the lady as she stepped into the road. I could see what was going to happen and started to beep my horn to try to warn them both. The driver moved off and pushed her to the ground. He just couldn't see her."

The skip truck driver, Tony Hamilton, of Flockton Crescent, East Bowling, Bradford said in a written statement: "I heard a horn go off so I checked my mirrors but couldn't see anything so I pulled out.

"I then looked in my rear view mirror and saw a body lying in the road. I pulled over and somebody told me I had run over an old lady." Accident investigator PC Philip Jackson said: "Because of the height of the truck and size of the dashboard you would not be able to see a woman of Mrs Spreckley's size if she stepped out so close to you."

Mrs Spreckley, of Charnwood Close, Undercliffe, died from multiple head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Recording an accident verdict, Mr Whittaker said: "I feel it is appropriate Mr Hamilton should not blame himself. It is a great tragedy that a person of 82 should die in this way."

Bradford Council says it has been planning to install two pedestrian crossings in the area since before the accident. One will be at the Killinghall Road and Harrogate Road junction and the other at Otley Road and Northcote Road.

A spokeswoman said: "Work is due to be started in either April or May."
