A retired weaver celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.

Alice Clapham, of Woodville Care Home, Spring Gardens Lane, received a special congratulation card from the Queen last Thursday.

Her two sons, Jack and Herbert, attended the celebration, along with Woodville staff.

Herbert, 75, said: "My mother lived on her own until she was 96. She started work at 12 years old and her main job was as a weaver at Salts Mill in Saltaire.

"In her heyday she was a worker, that's all she's ever known, but she would always find time to help anyone.

"But as a person she was happy. She enjoyed life and liked a bit of fun The staff here are great and were are all very much for this celebration - they do such a good job."

Alice lived at Greenhead Road, Utley, prior to moving to the retirement home four years ago.

The former pupil of Mornington Road School, Bingley, has two sisters, Edna Helliwell, 87, and Edith Rowthorne, 94.

Herbert's wife Marjorie, 71, added: "Some days she's good and some days she's not so good, but she's a very dear lady. Everyone has great admiration for her."

Ann Ellison, deputy manager at Woodville ,agreed: "Alice is a lovely lady. She's very religious and does her prayers every morning -- a really nice lady."
