A CHange in the town's binge boozing culture has been called for by a Keighley police inspector.

Insp Nigel Cawthorne said he would welcome restrictions to limit all-inclusive and two for one drink offers in the town's pubs and clubs.

The call has been made as new Government guidelines targeting 18-25 year old drinkers are launched.

The guidelines include a warning that pubs and clubs may have to contribute to policing costs, and will see the targeting of pubs and shops that serve under 18s.

Insp Cawthorne said: "Luckily Keighley does not attract large numbers of drinkers from further afield like Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and even Bingley.

"However, there is still a significant amount of alcohol-fuelled disorder on Friday and Saturday night."

"Long term, I think we need a culture change. I'd welcome a restriction on alcohol offers such as 'all you can drink'.

"At the moment we have additional patrols, a club and pub watch scheme for licensees, and street drinking legislation stopping alcohol in the central Keighley area.

"All these measures stop violent drink related crime.

"We are all working together and welcome any new legislation."

John Wilkinson, assistant manager at Fusion nightclub on North Street, claimed his club already enforced a strict drinking policy.

He said: "We are part of pub and club watch and the police make regular checks with our door staff."

Mr Wilkinson did concede that cut-price two for one drinks deals were popular and offered at Fusion.

He said: "We have a strict policy of if a customer is intoxicated, we refuse to serve them or just serve them water and we have warning notices about this in the main entrance.

"We welcome a new, sensible approach because we don't want drunks making the place look untidy."

Keighley MP Ann Cryer said: "I wholeheartedly welcome the Government's proposals to tackle binge drinking and anti-social behaviour in general.

"The message is clear -- it is good to go out and have fun, but yobbish behaviour will not be tolerated."
