Young entrepreneurs in Keighley had the chance to show off their business skills at a manufacturing challenge last week.

The annual Manufacturing Challenge Awards, run by Keighley and District Training Association Ltd (KADTAL), was held in Keighley College's art department, off Dalton Lane.

Three schools took part in the challenge -- Oakbank School, Parkside School and Holy Family School -- where five years of production time was squeezed into just four hours.

Each team was given a factory which had been made as inefficient as possible. Across five rounds, the teams had to make changes to the way the company would be run -- from something as simple as changing the desk layout to making people redundant -- all in a bid to make the company leaner and more productive.

The final aim of the crash course in business was to produce a widget costing below £20.

At the end of the challenge, each company was checked by inspectors and a team from Holy Family School took first place. They were presented with a shield, which they will keep until next year's challenge.

Adrian Walker of KADTAL said: "This year's challenge went really well. We all agreed that it was definitely the most successful to date as far as running goes. Everything went a lot smoother than in past years."

l In last week's report of the Keighley News/Asian Eye Recruitment Fair we missed KADTAL from the list of exhibitors. We apologise for any embarrassment this may have caused.
