A permanent garden of remembrance is to be set up alongside Keighley's war memorial.

Last year a remembrance garden was made on the lawns around Town Hall Square for mourners and other people to lay down poppies.

Now Keighley Town Council has joined forces with M & G Stone Supplies, of Alkincote Street, Keighley, to build a new permanent memorial.

Cllr Alan Rhodes said: "We decided we wanted a permanent garden.

"When we approached Garry Hodgkinson, the managing director of M&G Stone Supplies, he said: 'These men gave their lives so the least I could do is give this'. I think this is very noble."

The stone tablet includes the hand-carved words "Lest We Forget" and the garden will have some other perimeter stones to provide a garden for poppies to be laid.

It will be officially dedicated in Town Hall Square at a later date.

Cllr Rhodes added: "People will be able to go along any time they want. It is not tied to any conflict -- it is for everyone."

Mr Hodgkinson added: "We have donated our services and design free of charge. Obviously, we are part of the Keighley community and we want to assist the community wherever we can.

"It is for the Royal British Legion, which is a worthwhile organisation."

Two stonemasons, Mark Fox and Ken Wray, have also donated their masonry skills without charge.

Mr Hodgkinson said: "I was quite delighted that they didn't want paying for their services. It is a great gesture."
