COUNCILLORS in South Craven are leading a protest in the latest battle against their West Yorkshire postcode.

Coun Ian Fulton, of Farnhill Parish Council, wrote to Royal Mail last month asking for BD20 to be changed to a new North Yorkshire postcode.

But Royal Mail replied: "We will only change an outgoing postcode if there are operational difficulties."

The response has infuriated Coun Fulton and he is now urging the 15,000 BD20 residents to inundate Royal Mail with complaints.

He said: "We pay North Yorkshire rates, but cannot get discounted Dales Rail fares for the district because of our West Yorkshire postcode.

"Neither can we get cheaper Metro rates for West Yorkshire, as discounted fares end at Steeton and Silsden. We just can't win."

Coun Pat Fairbank, of Bradley Parish Council, has been campaigning to change the postcode since August 2002.

She said: "Our addresses should be correct for the area to which we belong."
