SKIPTON'S Fire and Rescue Service is doing its bit to recruit the firefighters of the future.
Later this month it will launch its fire cadet scheme, where youngsters can learn to work as part of a team and develop leadership skills as well as having fun.
Group fire manager for Craven district Dave McCabe said the scheme was a wonderful idea.
"The most important thing that they will learn is the community fire safety aspect of our role," he explained.
"These days we are as much about preventative action such as running road traffic accident initiatives with the police."
Already 12 youngsters have been recruited and will start their training on Thursday April 22.
Organisers have secured funding of £12,000.
Mr McCabe added: "We have got proper kits for them and an old fire engine that we have serviced and got into a road-worthy condition."
